Album of the Week

“Amnesiac” by Radiohead is their fifth album released in 2001 and one of my personal favorites. Recorded in the same period as the more popular “Kid A”, it received far less attention. While recorded at the same time, Amnesiac takes a left where Kid A takes a right.

Miike Snow, the Swedish indie pop duo who are, in my opinion, better know for their collaborations and remixes with other artists. The tracks on this album can be found remixed by a multitude of people. But this is where it all started, so definitely worth a listen!

“Lost Souls” by Doves is a heavy, melodic journey that is probably the best album to come out of England since Oasis’s “Definately Maybe”.  This post-Britpop trio released this debut album in 2000 after a 4 year collaboration and its nothing short of masterful. Great listening, especially on a late night.

The 1996 debut album “Becoming X” from the Sneaker Pimps is my favorite album this week. There was also a remix album that followed this, which is equally as good. Get lost in some downtempo goodness and the soothing voice of Kelli Dayton (her only album with the band) and enjoy this killer album.

Moby released his fifth album “Play” in 1999 to huge success. The album is a huge crossover from his earlier more techno-driven albums. Play has an eclectic mix of electronic, rock, and ambient driven tunes perfect for listening from start-to-finish. Just push Play!

I’m rolling with Modest Mouse’s second stuido album “The Lonesome Crowded West” (1997). This is one of my favorite albums by MM, even though I wish they could all be album of the week. Watch Isaac Brock perform on YouTube and you’ll see why they are seriously kick-ass. I’m posting this link of when I saw them live. I don’t even have to explain how awesome it is, even if you aren’t a MM fan. MM-Dramamine (3/14/09) Electric Factory, Philly

Yeah..like I was going to leave my all-time favorite band out of the lineup for long. Their first official studio album, simply titled “Music”, 311 brought their first album to the mainstream in 1993 and hasn’t quit since. Known for their tireless touring, bi-annual 311 day marathons (been there..twice..done that), and upcoming Caribbean cruise–they still remain one of the best live bands out there today. So nod your head to this, if you haven’t before!

As I sadly found out that a show they were playing was sold out, I thought damn, I never realized they were so popular. Another person goes “yeah, Black Keys are blowing up”. And that they are. While not their newest album, Attack & Release is the bands 5th studio album filled with some trippy bluesy rock. “Psychotic Girl” is one of my favs but the whole album–any album is just fantastic!

Gorillaz 3rd studio album, Plastic Beach, is a virtual jam-fest of originals and collaborations with artists like Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mark E Smith, Mos Def and the cosmic Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. With lyrics focusing on consumerism and ecology, this album has some deeper meaning. Listen to this album and try to tell me its not awesome, I dare you!

My inaugural choice for album of the week is one that I have been listening to almost nonstop this summer. Santa Barbara’s Rebelution released their third studio album Bright Side of Life in 2009 and have been relentlessly touring ever since. If you enjoy some quality Cali-Reggae get this album. If you don’t…then fucking listen to it anyway. You won’t be disappointed, this album is seriously awesome from start to finish.
